Unlike learning in a traditional classroom, online education can lead to ‘homework’ where students are expected to complete certain tasks. Thus, the concept of classroom work is lost. Another problem is that while in traditional classrooms, each student has an opportunity to ask questions, an opportunity that is not available in the online classroom. A major drawback of online education is that it lacks social interaction. Since most subjects are taught through written text, there is no interaction with classmates or lecturers. One can not ask questions to their instructors and pose questions to them via email, nor can they ask questions to their instructors via the internet. Though one can interact via telephone calls, video conferencing and chat sessions, online education does not facilitate face to face classroom learning, leading to the absence of effective communication between learners and teachers/lecturers.

On the other hand, campus-based courses, such as regular classes, have a greater social aspect and offer a better learning experience. A student attending regular classes can ask questions to his instructor, discuss his assignments with other students and look for help from other professors. Furthermore, a student attending a regular class can improve his/her general knowledge by visiting other institutions and learning more about the subject. A student in a regular course can also build up a network of fellow students who can offer him/her tips on subjects and can serve as a point of contact during research.
