This footway leads to an enormous imposing cross, from the top of which one can cherish the outstanding view of villages and bright green valleys that are generously stretched around. Only a part of the total length of the nature reserve is open to visitors, about a 1 km long stretch through which a nature trail leads. They are so wonderful to watch as they display black and yellow colors at rest, which change to cherry-red when in flight. The Valley is situated close to the village Theologos, some 23 km southeast of Rhodes town, and 10 km from the Airport. The Valley was found in the 1930s by Italians, who developed a beautiful 1 km path that goes through the canyon along with the areas where the butterflies are most densely populated. The first studies were conducted by German entomologist Reinhard Eiger. The Secret of the Valley lies with the vast density of Liquidambar Styrax trees and the resin that it produces.
